Activities may include research, pilot tests, technology transfer, alignment of laws and regulations, and partnerships with other states and the private sector. Consider the development of a Transportation Choices Plan based on this research.

This Implementation Action supports the following FTP objectives:
  • Increase the use of new mobility options and technologies such as shared, automated, and connected vehicles
  • Increase the share of person trips using public transportation and other alternatives to single occupancy motor vehicles
  • Increase the number of quality options for visitor travel to, from, and within Florida
  • Increase the number of quality options for moving freight to, from, and within Florida
  • Increase the efficiency and convenience of connecting between multiple modes of transportation
  • Adapt transportation infrastructure and technologies to meet changing customer needs

 

Enhance public transportation options

Activities may include targeted state support for capital investments in public transportation systems; support for rural transit services; and enhanced integration of transit infrastructure, service, information, and payment with other modal options to support complete end to end trips. Programs including “Go Go Grandparents!” and pilot programs such as the East Central Florida Corridor Task Force Regional Transit Vision are good examples.

Identify strategies for enhancing bicycling and walking as transportation choices

Activities may include linking pedestrian and bicycle facilities to other modal options to support complete end to end trips and enhanced information sharing. Best practices include FDOT Commuter Assistance Program, Cycling Savvy by ABEA, and rethinkyourcommute.com.

Transportation Choices Compendium

The Transportation Choices Compendium provides guidance to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and other statewide, regional, and local partners for working toward the Florida Transportation Plan (FTP) goal of more transportation choices for people and freight. Its purpose is to identify and share recent innovative strategies that peer agencies in the United States are testing and implementing and was developed to be a resource for regional agencies, such as metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), regional planning councils (RPCs), transit agencies, and local governments to develop and enhance strategies related to transportation choices for people and freight.
